The first ever McLaren Automotive road car to ditch the twin-turbo V8.
Just a decade ago, McLaren Automotive was founded – and in these passing years, the supercar brand has evolved from the sole MP4-12C to a collection of various different and successful models within the market of exotic high-performance cars. Competing with marques such as Ferrari and Lamborghini is no easy feat, but if one brand has successfully managed that, it’s McLaren.
Whereas all previous McLaren Automotive cars have received a variation of the brand’s 3.8L twin-turbo V8, its the new Artura that breaks the traditition, with an all new hybrid 3.0L twin-turbo V6.
A 70kW (94hp) compact axial flux E-motor and 430kW (577hp) near-200hp-per-litre engine makes for a combined output of 500kW (671hp) and 720Nm. Driven through an eight-speed SSG dual-clutch gearbox and new e-differential, the new Artura manages 0-100km/h acceleration in just 3.0 seconds, 0-200km/h in a ferocious 8.3 seconds, and 0-300km/h in just 21.5 seconds. Top speed is governed at 330km/h.
Fitted with a hybrid system, the instant 225Nm of torque springs the new Artura to life faster than the equivalent 570S, and makes for lightning fast throttle response which the brand dubs ‘the sharpest-ever throttle response from a McLaren supercar’.
McLaren has managed to implement the hybrid system without compromising on weight, and the new Artura is based on the brand’s McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), optimised for their High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) systems. This means that the carbon monocoque weighs just 82 kilograms, and the entire car comes in with a kerb weight of just 1,498kg – making it the lightest vehicle of its class.
The new hybrid system also comes with a built-in ‘EV Mode’ which runs the car solely off the batteries for 30 kilometres, making a small regular commute a lot more efficient than it has ever been in a McLaren. In standard running mode, the Artura claims to use just 4.7L per 100km of fuel (50mpg+) which also makes it the most fuel efficient McLaren ever made.
The suspension of the Artura has been completely overhauled from previous McLarens, with an uprated electro-hydraulic steering rack and multi-modal ‘Proactive Damping Control’ which McLaren says enhances the agility, stability and dynamic performance of the car.
Orders have immediately begun for the Artura from McLaren retailers, with first deliveries expected to reach the UK in the third quarter of this year. Price comes in at £185,500 in entry specification, with three higher-end specifications available to buyers – Performance, TechLux and Vision.
Performance offers a more sporty appearance, TechLux as the name suggests revolves around the technical and luxurious aspects of the car, and Vision attempts a more avant-garde design.
