Pagani Huayra R to debut in January with naturally aspirated V12

Pagani hits the track and ditches forced induction with the successor to the Zonda R.

If you recall the Zonda R from a decade ago, you’ll remember that signature N/A V12 scream. The absurd track-only masterpiece has engrained its sound and image into the minds of all who’ve heard it, and now – Pagani is back, with the hardcore R version of the Zonda’s successor.

It’s called the Huayra R, and it ditches turbo forced induction for instant throttle response and N/A howl.

Previously, all Pagani engines have been built by Mercedes-AMG, stretching from the V12 found in the original Zonda C12 back in 1999, to the marque’s latest Huayra. Traditionally, the Zonda remained naturally aspirated throughout its lifetime, with various displacements ranging between 6.0L and 7.3L, while the later Huayra adopted a 6.0L twin-turbocharged setup.

While the 617kW (827hp) twin-turbocharged V12 powerhouse found in the latest Huayra Imola is sourced from AMG, the upcoming N/A V12 will be an all-new engine, built by Pagani. Although likely drawn off the AMG block, it has been solely designed for power and precision around a track, meaning that the marque doesn’t need it to conform to emissions regulations.

The upcoming reveal was initially rumoured to be in November, however this has been proven false by the company themselves, with a spokesperson confirming that the release will occur January.

We haven’t heard much else about the upcoming track-car, but we do know that the Zonda R smashed Nürburging lap records on its release – so we can only hope that the upcoming Huayra R matches and modernises the capability of its predecessor.
