Emissions regulations prevent a V8 powered Bronco from coming to fruition.
Rumours of a V8 Bronco have been circulating since last year, even before the Bronco itself was released. Several reports since have dimished the likelihood of this coming to fruition, but its a recent interview from Muscle Cars & Trucks that may just be the confirmation that Bronco enthusaists have dreaded.
According to Jeff Seaman, Ford Global’s Program Manager and Eric Loefller, the Bronco’s chief engineer, emissions are the major culprit in preventing Ford from fitting the Bronco with eight-cylinder power, saying that “we have to manage the CO2 implications of the product”. The carbon footprint of a V8 Bronco would thus make it difficult to reach set emissions targets.
Ford also states that in top trim, the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine provides sufficient power to satisfy customer needs as potential buyers are supposedly more interested in power and torque output over cylinder count. The V6, fed with twin-turbochargers produces a reasonable 231kW (310hp) of power and an adequate 542Nm of torque.
A Bronco Raptor is expected, and will likely utilise the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 from the American market Explorer ST. Power and torque for this motor stands at 298kW (400hp) and 562Nm respectively, which although is no match for the company’s V8 in the Mustang GT – it could be a good compromise.
